When the Gates Open
Mika is 22 when one bad night on a dusty road lands her behind the gates of Alice Springs Correctional Centre. Drink driving. Disqualified licence. An unregistered car. Choices she can’t undo.
Inside, winter closes in. Family are there too — together, but ashamed. Ceremony will go on without them this year.
At first, shame feels heavier than the green uniform she wears. But slowly, something steadier returns. Mika finds her voice again. Other women begin to listen. A frightened eighteen-year-old from Ampilatwatja arrives, carrying grief and fear of payback. Together, they begin to imagine futures that are not defined by their worst moments.
Through education, leadership, and practical pathways — from community policing to hairdressing through TAFE at CDU — Mika learns that responsibility can be stronger than shame.
When the gates open, she won’t walk out perfect.
She will walk out honest. Strong. Ready.
